BELGRADE (dpa-AFX) – Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has welcomed the UN Security Council resolution to secure the Gaza peace plan. “This shows that the United Nations system works,” said the CDU politician during a visit to the Serbian capital Belgrade. He added: “Germany has always made it clear that for us this resolution is the decisive key to the peaceful future of reconciliation between Israel and the Palestinians.” That’s why the resolution is “a decisive milestone for us towards a good future.”
The UN resolution makes it possible to implement the Middle East peace plan and thus creates the necessary basis for legitimacy for the work of a peacekeeping force, said Wadephul. This should make a contribution to ensuring security, ensuring adequate humanitarian care for the population in the Gaza Strip and finding an initial administrative solution for the region. “That’s good news.”
The Federal Foreign Minister said that the Federal Government remains ready to play a constructive role in the further reconstruction process for the Gaza Strip. People see Egypt in a leadership role here and are waiting for Cairo to issue invitations to a corresponding reconstruction conference. He and Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (SPD) are ready at any time to travel to Cairo or to take other measures that could help make progress in the Gaza Strip. Above all, constructive talks for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians in this region must begin./bk/DP/mis
