Germany's national basketball coach Alex Mumbru in the test match against Spain before the European Championships

As of: November 17, 2025 4:48 p.m

After recovering from his illness, national basketball coach Alex Mumbru has nominated the squad to start the World Cup qualification.

World and European champion Germany is going into the matches against Israel on November 28th in Ulm against Israel and three days later in Cyprus with a total of 16 professionals, but without the NBA stars around captain Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner. The upcoming World Cup will take place in Qatar in 2027.

Four European champions should be part of the team: Isaac Bonga, Oscar da Silva, Justus Hollatz and Andreas Obst. However, the quartet will still be challenged in the Euroleague in the days before the Israel game, which will make operations difficult right from the start.

Agbokoko, Agva, Pape and Welp are still without an international match

There are also four debutants in Norris Agbokoko, Mahir Agva, Till Pape and Collin Welp who have not yet played an international match. The absence of players from the North American professional league is normal during the NBA season.

National coach Mumbrú will be on the sidelines against Israel for the first time since the European Championships. The former professional struggled with pancreatitis in the summer. He was in hospital for five nights during the European Championships in Tampere, Finland, and again for more than four weeks immediately after the tournament.

Ibrahimagic will be assistant coach again

Instead of Mumbrú, his assistant Alan Ibrahimagic looked after the team at the European Championships, which Germany won European Championship gold after nine wins. Ibrahimagic will now act as assistant coach again.
