The Torhoutsesteenweg with all the major shops has been a source of annoyance for years for those who want to enter Ostend. Traffic jams often increase because the regional road – together with the many car parks for shops – is not properly constructed.
“There have been traffic jams here for twenty years. It gets worse every year and safety for cyclists and pedestrians is also problematic. The city of Ostend does not manage the road, but Flanders does. Together with the Roads and Traffic Agency, we will draw up a study next year. 500,000 euros has been provided for this to find out which infrastructural changes need to be made,” says councilor Judith Ooms.
