Doha (dpa) – The world football association has confirmed the exclusion of Russian teams from all FIFA competitions.
In the World Cup host city of Doha, the Council ratified several decisions that had already been made regarding the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, as announced by FIFA. Currently, neither Russian clubs nor Russian national teams are allowed to participate in world association competitions. This had already been decided by the office of the executive body, the confirmation was a formal act.
Most recently, the International Court of Arbitration for Sports rejected the Russians’ appeal against the suspension of the teams by FIFA. Russia’s men’s national team was ruled out of World Cup qualifiers ahead of their play-off semi-final against Poland, meaning they will not take part in the finals in Qatar.
The world association had also decided that contracts with Ukrainian clubs would be automatically suspended until the end of the season, and players with Russian clubs could unilaterally suspend their contracts until June 30. The German Football Association wants to allow clubs to sign players from clubs in Ukraine and Russia, but not allow them to play in competitive games.
