A 54-year-old Ukrainian man from Oude Pekela has been sentenced to 406 days in prison, of which 90 days are conditional, for stabbing a fellow countryman at a recreational park in Tynaarlo. The judge finds attempted serious assault proven. The man was also sentenced for harassing his ex-wife and violating a location ban.
The penalty is slightly lower than the requirement. This means that the man no longer has to spend time in a cell. He couldn’t stomach the fact that his wife wanted to divorce him. He visited her at the recreation park where she temporarily lived and at her work in Zeegse. When he saw the 43-year-old victim at his ex-wife’s chalet in early January, the situation was over.
The younger man suffered stab wounds to his shoulder and forearm. He only wanted to talk to him, the man in his fifties previously told the judge. He had to defend himself against an attack from the other. The judge did not agree with this defense story. Witnesses saw the confrontation and said the younger man was attacked, not the other way around. Moreover, the suspect made varying statements each time.
“The idea that people carry a knife and actually use it at the slightest provocation causes serious unrest in society,” the judge said. Moreover, the judge finds it amiss that the man does not take responsibility for his actions. The suspect must pay the victim more than 2,000 euros.
