The Prison Service and also the trade unions have repeatedly raised the issue of the shortage of space in prisons. There are inhumane conditions for the detainees and risks for the staff.
“We remain in a crisis situation,” said Kathleen Van De Vijver, spokesperson and director general of the Prison Service on Wednesday. There is a need for “short-term measures”.
