“I feel that it is time to hand over the baton this summer after eleven very nice, but intensive seasons,” says Huiberts at the AZ website. “This role requires complete, 24/7, dedication and I notice that after this season the time has come to enjoy other things.”
Huiberts formed a duo with general manager Robert Eenhoorn for many years. The latter already said goodbye to the club last season. He was replaced by Merijn Zeeman.
Huiberts is the next important link to leave. “The phase that AZ is currently in also ensures that I can leave the club with a good feeling. And AZ deserves someone who can put the same energy into it over a longer period of time in the coming years.”
“I wanted to give the club enough time to think carefully about my succession,” says Huiberts. “I will continue to work tirelessly until my last day to contribute to the success of our wonderful club.”
Timing
Yet the moment is remarkable. Last week, Alex Kroes, technical director of Ajax, announced that he was making his position available. The Supervisory Board of the Amsterdam team prevented Kroes from immediately leaving, but the vacancy remains.
Huiberts has been mentioned for several years to become technical director at Ajax. Given the timing, this fuels speculation. Yet Huiberts gives another reason for his upcoming departure.
“I notice that after more than ten years in this demanding role, there is a need to take more time for my family in the near future and to distance myself from the football world after this season.”
