Dressage star Isabell Werth is taking a break from competitions due to the death of her partner Wolfgang Urban.

“She’s taking a rest period,” said national coach Monica Theodorescu. “She doesn’t want to ride in public at this time.”

The former trading manager Urban died at the beginning of October at the age of 80.

After the merger of Karstadt and Quelle, Urban was CEO of the Essen-based trading group from 2000 to 2004. Werth worked at Karstadt for a few years and met Urban there. The couple has a son together.

Werth originally wanted to ride at Germany’s largest indoor equestrian tournament in Stuttgart this weekend.

According to the national coach, the eight-time Olympic champion is now planning to take part in the indoor tournament in Frankfurt next time in December.
