Hedgehogs are brought in from the region and from other places in the country. There is room for a maximum of two hundred hedgehogs, and there are now more than 110 animals inside.
This year, the Huizer hedgehog shelter has already taken in a total of 726 sick or weakened hedgehogs.
Huizen is not the only hedgehog shelter that is busy and full. The problem also occurs at other hedgehog sanctuaries in the country.
Skinny and small
The hedgehogs are so thin because of the dry spring. As a result, there are too few insects. Insects are the main meal for hedgehogs, explains hedgehog sanctuary manager Pauline van Dijk. “They just don’t have enough food.”
