After a weak first half of the season with only two wins from ten games, the New York Giants pulled the ripcord and fired head coach Brian Daboll.
The Giants announced this on Monday. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take over on an interim basis. Daboll is the second head coach to be fired this season after Brian Callahan (Tennessee Titans).
“The last few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have failed to live up to our expectations for this franchise. We understand our fans’ frustration and will work to deliver a significantly improved product,” said a joint statement from President John Mara and Chairman Steve Tisch.
Daboll came to New York in 2022 with great expectations after playing a key role in the development of Josh Allen as offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. In his first season, he surprisingly led the Giants to the playoffs with a record of 9-7-1 and was named Coach of the Year.
But the high didn’t last. After a disappointing 3-14 preseason and a weak 2-8 start to the current season, the Giants now want to give new impetus.
During Daboll’s tenure, the Giants let Saquon Barkley go, quarterback Daniel Jones stagnated and was eventually benched. The quarterback is now experiencing a renaissance with the Indianapolis Colts, Barkley won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Both cases reflected poorly on Daboll and the Giants’ front office.
Despite the sporting misery, the situation in New York is not uninteresting for possible coaching candidates. With Jaxson Dart, the team has a young quarterback with potential. Daboll should also have another chance at a position as head coach thanks to his successful past with the Bills.
