In the top game at Manchester City, Liverpool FC could have jumped to second place in the table. But the home team gave the “Reds” no chance.
Liverpool FC suffered a bitter defeat on matchday 11 of the Premier League. Coach Arne Slot’s team clearly lost 0-3 (0-2) in the top game at Manchester City on Sunday and thus missed out on second place in the table. That’s where the “Cityzens” are now, who are the first pursuers of leaders Arsenal. The “Gunners” had only played 2-2 at AFC Sunderland at the lecture. The newcomer is currently fourth. Liverpool slips to eighth place.
Former BVB star Erling Haaland gave Pep Guardiola’s team the lead after 29 minutes. The Norwegian had missed a penalty shortly before. LFC keeper Mamardashvili, who had caused the penalty himself, fished out Haaland’s attempt from the bottom right corner (13th minute).
Liverpool FC, where DFB star Florian Wirtz was in the starting line-up, equalized shortly before half-time through van Dijk. But the captain’s header was not recognized by the referee team – and rightly so. Van Dijk’s teammate Robertson was offside and irritated City keeper Donnarumma (39′). On the other hand, the home team struck a second time. Nico’s shot from the penalty area was decisively deflected by van Dijk and hit the Liverpool goal (45’+3).
In the second period, Gakpo missed the connection for the guests (60th). City punished that straight away. The lively Doku, who posed Liverpool problems throughout the game, flicked the ball into the corner – a dream goal (60th). The game was finally decided.
