SC Freiburg managed to turn the game around in Nice. In the end, Julian Schuster’s team was able to celebrate – including some strange moments.

The successful streak continues: SC Freiburg successfully completed its second away game of the season in the Europa League on Thursday evening. In Nice, Julian Schuster’s team presented a confident performance and ultimately secured a 3-1 win against Franck Haise’s team.

The Breisgauer team achieved their third win in their fourth game at international level. So far, Freiburg are still unbeaten in the Europa League. The team from the Bundesliga is now in second place in the table. For OCG Nice it was the fourth defeat in the fourth game of this Europa League season. Unusual for both teams: the balls had to be exchanged several times.

SC Freiburg put the hosts under pressure from the start and dominated the game in Nice. After a few minutes there was the first exchange: the ball had too little air. But the new play equipment also had to be replaced a second time within the first ten minutes. Derry Scherhant took the first shot at the start of the game – but Nice goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf was there (8th minute).

The home team also had good chances – and became dangerous. A shot from Nice winger Jérémie Boga just bounced off Freiburg’s central defender Philipp Lienhart. After twenty minutes, Nice became stronger and stronger while Freiburg struggled. Coach Julian Schuster looked dissatisfied on the sidelines and shouted for his team to be more courageous – but initially without success.

Scherhant made a mistake that Nice’s Kevin Carlos took advantage of. Freiburg’s Lienhart came too late as the striker scored to make it 1-0 for the hosts. But Freiburg remained vigilant and also took advantage of a careless mistake by Melvin Bard. He let the ball jump too far forward in his own box, which Yuito Suzuki took as an invitation. Johan Manzambi just had to weld in – the equalizer made it 1-1 (29th).

Shortly afterwards, things got strange again: referee Anastasios Sidiropoulos called for the third rally of the game. He called out to the side of the field: “Bring me other balls.” Afterwards, things continued as normal – and Freiburg really turned up the heat. After another chance from Scherhant, Bard came too late against Suzuki in his own penalty area and hit the Japanese. Sidiropoulos pointed to the spot and Freiburg’s veteran Vincenzo Grifo made it 2-1 (39′).
