In the fatal motorcycle crash in Malaysia, alongside Noah Dettwiler and José Antonio Rueda, things got worse than initially known.

The new Moto3 world champion had to receive emergency medical care on the track due to a cardiac arrest, the Red Bull KTM Ajo team announced on Wednesday as part of an update. Initially there was only talk of a fractured hand and several bruises.

At the end of October, Rueda crashed into the rear of Dettwiler’s machine at high speed during the warm-up lap before the Sepang Grand Prix. The Swiss had several cardiac arrests as a direct result of the accident and suffered life-threatening injuries. Dettwiler is now over the mountain after several operations.

On Friday, the 20-year-old from the CIP Green Power team regained consciousness and was later able to leave the intensive care unit.

Rueda underwent surgery on his right hand in Barcelona this week. Plates were inserted into the thumb, two metacarpals and the base of the radius.
