The NHL has updated its assessment of the composition of the Finnish national ice hockey team for next winter’s Winter Olympics in Milan, and there are significant changes.
Alexander Barkov and Patrik Laine injuries have messed up the Lions’ plans, and neither superstar is likely to be fit for the games in February.
Barkov underwent surgery in September and his recovery will take at least another six months. Laine, on the other hand, underwent surgery at the end of October, and is not expected to be fit for the game before the Olympics.
The duo Barkov–Laine was still included in the NHL’s preliminary evaluations in July, but now both have been dropped from the list. Also age Eeli Tolvanen has fallen off the list since the previous prediction.
According to the NHL’s forecast, Barkov, Laine and Tolvanen will be replaced by new names in the Lions’ lineup Joel Armia, Matias Maccelli and Oliver Kapanen.
In addition, in defense Nikolas Matipalo rises according to the forecast Juuso Välimäki in place of. The goalkeeper trio remains unchanged from the previous assessment: Juuse Saros, Kevin Lankinen and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
The Lions’ final Olympic team will be announced at the end of the year. The 2026 Winter Olympics will take place from 6 to 22 February in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
