Jannik Sinner is currently dominating the tennis scene with Carlos Alcaraz. Boris Becker apparently almost became part of it.

According to his own statements, Boris Becker almost became Jannik Sinner’s coach. As the former tennis star confirmed to the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”, there were concrete discussions with the current world number two at the beginning of 2022. But the situation changed drastically for Becker: a few weeks later he was sentenced in London to two and a half years in prison for insolvency offenses, of which he had to serve seven and a half months.

At that time, Becker said he was still waiting for the verdict. During this time Sinner contacted him. “I thought it was a secret. I never talked about it. It’s true,” Becker told the newspaper from Milan, where he now lives. “I said to Jannik: ‘I don’t know how it will turn out. I can’t commit.'” So he gave Sinner a few names – including the Australian Darren Cahill, who has been training the South Tyrolean since the summer of 2022. Since then, Sinner has won four Grand Slam tournaments.

Becker answered cautiously whether he could imagine becoming the 24-year-old’s coach at some point. “Today I’m in a different phase of life. My family is growing, I have a new business. I don’t want to be on the road so much anymore, and maybe the role of coach is starting to get too narrow for me,” he said.
