The past few days it has been downright mild autumn weather with a regional afternoon temperature of around 20 degrees. A moderate hairdryer wind was partly responsible for this. According to Weeronline, with a hairdryer wind, dry wind blows over the ridge that descends on the north side of the Alps. A descending wind warms up quickly, resulting in soft and dry air on the north side of the Alps.
Cover
The mild and fairly sunny weather gives way to showery weather. Next night and during the day on Sunday, heavy showers will move eastwards over the Alps from the west. There is significantly colder air at the rear of the showers and this colder air type will gain more and more ground during Sunday afternoon. This causes the snowfall limit to drop considerably. On Sunday night the snowfall limit is still between 2000-2500 meters, locally even higher, but on Sunday during the day the snowfall limit drops to approximately 1500 meters. There is also a strong southwest wind in the mountains.
During the night from Sunday to Monday it will remain changeable with a further decreasing frost line. On Monday morning there will be snow in the Northern Alps, locally up to 1100 meters. In the mountains it will snow all Sunday and 20-30 centimeters will fall until Monday, while the valleys will have to make do with a few centimeters.
Not long lasting
So it will be a bit wintery in the Alps, but it will not last long. From Monday it will be dry and sunny again for a few days. The wind decreases and the temperature rises considerably. In the Alpine valleys the mercury will rise towards 15 degrees on Wednesday.
