PSV and the municipality of Eindhoven want to expand the Philips Stadium. Both parties signed an agreement of intent on Friday evening for the PSV – Fortuna Sittard match. The plan is to expand the stadium by at least ten thousand seats.
Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem, general manager of PSV Marcel Brands and councilor Stijn Steenbakkers signed the agreement on Friday. This contains agreements about cooperation, frameworks and preconditions that must be met during the expansion.
The growth of the stadium is necessary, says Mayor Dijsselbloem: “Interest for a seat in the stadium has been growing for years, which is also reflected in the waiting list. I think a lot of PSV fans will be happy with the expansion.”
Still, it will take some time before fans can actually buy an extra ticket. According to PSV, the renovations are expected to start in 2027. Don’t worry, the intention is for the reigning champion to continue playing in their own stadium during the expansion. “We visited a few stadiums that are being expanded and are now also being played in, for example Manchester City,” says Marcel Brands.
First it must be investigated where the expansions will be located. After the first conversations, the north and east sides seem to be the biggest contenders. Exactly how many seats will be added will also be examined. “With the expansion, the Philips Stadium will become even more of a top facility that matches the ambitions of our growing city,” adds Alderman Steenbakkers.
Tens of millions
Marcel Brands is grateful to the municipality of Eindhoven: “The support of the municipality of Eindhoven is crucial to continue building the club. Literally and figuratively.” Brands does not yet know exactly what the project will cost, but it will be included in the costs. “The design phase has started. Then we will look at designs A and B and the associated costs, but you are soon talking about tens of millions.”
