During the week everyone is screaming for the VAR and just 2 days later a swallow leads to a penalty despite VAR 🤣
The discussions should not be about the aids but about the lousy referees. With such a million-dollar business, it simply cannot be that there are only 2-3 usable referees in Germany.
In my opinion, the discussion should not be about the individual referees, but about the system of referees.
While players can concentrate all day on being completely mentally and physically fit for work on match day, many referees (actually all of them) still have to work on the side, which means that they cannot be on the same level, especially physically, but which is at least necessary in order to always be in the best possible position.
When it comes to young talent, there are, not only in absolute terms but also proportionally, significantly more children trying to become professional footballers than Bundesliga referees. Why? Because as a player you can, in the best case scenario, concentrate on football and be admired by many. As a referee, you also have to do a job and, in the absolute best case, football fans know your name and have no opinion about you. What does a child who often only thinks in the best case scenario actually strive for?
Another point is the area and number of players that a football referee has to monitor. Basketball and ice hockey are better than football in both cases (i.e. fewer players/area per individual referee), handball is just behind football in terms of players, but clearly ahead of it in terms of area. This simply shows that for this immense number of players and this large area, there are too few referees directly on the field to always have a good/unobscured viewing angle.
Overall, I come to the conclusion that there are currently few referees in Germany who whistle consistently well, but if you look at other leagues, they also have a lot of problems (England, Spain), which for me also shows that the third point I mentioned is simply a not insignificant problem.
Instead of the DFB, without knowing any better behind the scenes, I would make refereeing a full-time job with appropriate pay and training, start a huge advertising campaign to improve the public perception of a referee and thus make the profession more attractive, and make at least (!) one more referee on the field mandatory for professional games.
And I also believe that this would increase the quality of game management in Germany in the long term.
