The Augsburg supporters let their anger out and came forward with sharp criticism on Friday evening. Coach Sandro Wagner reacts later.

Coach Sandro Wagner has shown understanding for the protest banners of FC Augsburg fans against him. He didn’t see them in the game, “but of course I have to say: It’s completely normal for spectators to be unhappy when the results aren’t there, and we have to accept that. Period,” said Wagner after the 0-1 (0-1) draw against Borussia Dortmund on Friday evening.

“Big words, no actions – how long do you want to wait?”, “Nobody is bigger than the club” and “Image change accomplished: from the gray mouse to the league’s shooting gallery” were written on banners that Augsburg’s supporters unfurled during the game. The club management also had to put up with criticism: “Personality cult and marketing madness – these are not our values,” another banner said.

“That’s a shame, of course, I can’t see my name now,” emphasized Wagner, looking at the banners, “but basically it’s a shame if the spectators aren’t satisfied.” At the same time, the ailing FCA coach praised the fans after they cheered the team up with applause despite their third defeat in a row without scoring their own goal. “The spectators already have a good feeling in Augsburg. I think they have already seen that the team is keen, that they are fighting for each other.”

Wagner, previously assistant coach to national coach Julian Nagelsmann with the German national team, came to Augsburg in the summer with great expectations. FCA got seven points from nine games under him. Before the defeat against BVB, there were embarrassments against RB Leipzig (0:6) and in the cup against VfL Bochum (0:1).
