The fans of FC Augsburg expressed clear criticism with several banners at the home game against Borussia Dortmund. The focus was on coach Sandro Wagner and the club management.
The tense situation at FC Augsburg is getting worse – and not just in terms of sport. At the home game against Borussia Dortmund, the club’s fans used the large stage to vent their displeasure with several banners. The criticism was not only directed at the team, but also at coach Sandro Wagner and the club management.
“Big words, no actions – how long do you want to wait?”: With this message, the supporters apparently demanded consequences for the lack of sporting success. Another banner addressed the team’s defensive weakness: “Image change accomplished: from the gray mouse to the league’s shooting gallery.”
In fact, FCA currently has the weakest defense in the Bundesliga – 20 goals conceded after nine matchdays speak for themselves. Since Wagner took office, Augsburg have scored seven points from eight games, making it their weakest start to the season in three years. Most recently, the cup was eliminated during the week against Bochum (0:1).
Sky expert Thomas Hitzlsperger was surprised by the fan reactions. “That is already clear, now on the 9th matchday. I can of course understand that people wanted something different up to this point. But in terms of clarity? FCA is not last, is not desolately behind. (…) I find this clarity at this point in time surprising,” he said during half-time.
The club management also received a clear message: “Personality cult and marketing madness – these are not our values.” This probably meant decisions surrounding the signing of Wagner. The coach took over the position in the summer.
Last but not least, the players were also the focus of fan criticism: “Should we teach you how to fight? Nobody is bigger than the club,” could be read on two other banners.
