The surprise team from the 2nd league missed out on slipping into first place. Hannover secured a draw with a late goal.

Exciting start to the second division weekend. In the top game between SV Elversberg and Hannover 96, both teams drew 2-2. Lukas Petkov initially gave the surprise team the lead (22nd), but an own goal from Florian Le Joncour equalized (43rd).

In the final phase things got really exciting again. Petkov first missed a penalty, but Bambasé Conté (80th) was able to give Elversberg the lead again with a follow-up shot. Then Virgil-Eugen Ghitä equalized (85′). Elversberg missed the jump to the top of the table. Schalke is first, Elversberg in second place – Hannover remains in fourth place.

Control of the game on Friday evening was taken over by the guests from Hanover, who arrived with fresh self-confidence after the derby win at Eintracht Braunschweig (3-0) and immediately scored a few goals. Benjamin Källman (16th) hit the inside post at the best opportunity before Elversberg struck ice-cold: Petkov headed the hosts into the lead with the first real chance. However, Hannover stuck with it, SVE keeper Nicolas Kristof unfortunately blocked a header from Källman against Le Joncour’s back – from there the ball bounced into the goal.

Second division top scorer Younes Ebnoutalib only came into play at Elversberg in the second half. Hannover once again provided the first exclamation mark, captain Enzo Leopold hit the crossbar with a free kick from 18 meters (56th). Things got turbulent in the final phase: 96 coach Christian Titz raged on the sidelines after Frederik Schmahl went down slightly and Elversberg was awarded a controversial penalty. Nahuel Noll parried against Petkov, but Conté was quickest. The lead didn’t last long, Ghita was there with his head.

With a great show of strength, Prussia Muenster ended its negative series and inflicted another defeat on Holstein Kiel after four games. Three days after reaching the cup round of 16, the Bundesliga relegated team gave up the game on Friday evening after taking a 1-0 lead and lost 1-2 (1-0) in front of 10,491 spectators in the Preußenstadion.

The hosts thus surpassed their opponents Kiel in the table and moved up to ninth place with 14 points. Kiel’s upswing was initially halted and the jump into the top half of the table was missed.
