Shaggy calls the situation in Jamaica “personal” because his wife was on the island during the hurricane. “My wife was lying on the floor in our house in Jamaica. The devastation was terrible,” said the singer.

The relief effort focuses mainly on the hard-hit west coast of the country.

“About 70 percent of the island has no electricity. Many transmission towers are down.” For this reason, the singer says he is worried about his friends, with whom he cannot get in touch. “Ignorance is where fear comes from,” he says.

Shaggy will remain in Jamaica in the coming days to coordinate work on site.

Jamaica was hit by Hurricane Melissa on Tuesday. The hurricane then headed towards Cuba and the Bahamas, causing significant damage there as well. The total confirmed deaths from the hurricane now stand at 44.
