Mayor Marco Out (55) of Assen is running for a third term. The Utrechter’s term of office expires next year in December and he would like to add a third term in Drenthe to it.
Out has been mayor of our provincial capital since 2014. Mayors in the Netherlands have terms of six years. In theory, after a third term as mayor, Out will have been mayor of the city for 18 years.
It is now up to the city council to decide whether to nominate Out for a third term. Although Out’s second term does not end until December next year, his potential reappointment is already starting due to the municipal elections in March next year. A busy period with campaigning and forming a new council after the elections.
That is why the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations considers it ‘wise and desirable’ that the current municipal council will decide on Out’s reappointment. The municipal council must have made a decision before the municipal elections.
For years, Out was a member of the VVD, but since 2018 he has been mayor without a party. In his own words because his liberal values no longer corresponded with the national course of the VVD.
