Trainer Roger Schmidt will start at Benfica next year. After several talks with the management of the club from Lisbon, Schmidt is about to sign a contract.
This is reported by the German sports magazine Kicker. Benfica is the current number three in the Portuguese league, nine points behind leader Porto. As a result, head coach Nélson Veríssimo is under fire.
The trainer is still in place due to the good performance in the Champions League. There it defeated Ajax in the eighth final.
A salient detail about the possible switch from Schmidt to Benfica is that the Portuguese club eliminated the Eindhoven players in the last qualifying rounds of the Champions League last summer. PSV lost 2-1 in Lisbon. In Eindhoven it remained 0-0.
Schmidt indicated in February that he would not renew at PSV. The club wanted to give him a new two-year contract, but the German prefers a new adventure. PSV and Roger Schmidt are still fighting for a prize on three fronts. The trainer wants to leave the Eindhoven team through the front door with at least one main prize in his pocket.
It is not yet clear when exactly white smoke will appear. The German media report that several talks have already been held with the trainer and an agreement is imminent.
