Beer cups fly, insults echo through the stadium: After the derby between MSV Duisburg and RW Essen, Uwe Koschinat is in top form.
Rot-Weiss Essen’s coach Uwe Koschinat used drastic words to criticize the fan chants at the third division derby in Duisburg. After the 1-1 draw, the 54-year-old caused a stir with a TV interview on Magenta Sport. RWE shared the already legendary interview on its Instagram channel on Monday.
During the entire game, shouts of “sons of bitches” echoed through the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena. In the final phase, beer cups flew onto the field from the Duisburg block when Essen goalkeeper Jakob Golz and left-back Franci Bouebari lay on the ground after a collision. MSV players stood protectively in front of the opposing players.
At the Magenta Sport microphone, Koschinat found clear words: “Maybe I’ll get a huge shitstorm now, but I always ask myself how many women must have worked in the horizontal industry somewhere in the last 30 years, because there can’t be that many ‘sons of bitches’ in the whole world.” He finds the insults inappropriate. If the fan camps supported their own teams, “it would be an even hotter derby.”
On Monday, the coach followed up: “I’ve been defamed like that from the stands at least five times. But I know my mother, I’m not a ‘son of a bitch’. I don’t understand these defamations, the fans should rather support their teams positively and not insult the opponents!”
The tensions have a history: In May, a Duisburg fan died after a medical emergency at a cup final between both teams. While the MSV supporters stopped their support, the Essen fans continued to cheer on their team – which caused dissatisfaction.
