Javier Milei’s story is not political. If his life were turned into a movie, when it comes to placing that film in the library it would have to be put on the science fiction shelf. In several ways. First because it contains literal elements of that supernatural world – advisory dogs, witches, prophecies and mediums – and also because of another very earthly one: just four years ago the libertarian was a marginal television economist who, locked in his parents’ apartment during the pandemic, was suffering from severe depression. That incredible story has just added another unpredictable chapter today.
Despite the wear and tear of the administration, two years of a harsh economic crisis, and various corruption scandals that hit the smallest circle of the Government squarely, La Libertad Avanza won with a resounding result at the national level. Just like two years ago, Milei beat all the odds and emerged as the winner again.
If the fictional line continues to be maintained as it has been until now, the only thing left to hope for is that the President continues accelerating in the curves. Although the victory speech he gave attempted to be more moderate than usual, all the instincts of the libertarian indicate otherwise. From now on, we can expect an ruling party that will seek deep reforms and perhaps even some of the most radical ideas that it put forward in the 2023 campaign. The thesis promoted by some, such as Mauricio Macri, of moving towards a more coalitional and moderate government promises to be left behind. There is, behind the result, another novelty of an international nature: MIlei once again demonstrated that a fierce adjustment can be made and still obtain votes. What a chainsaw symbolized in 2023 is no longer a promise, but a certainty. That such a brutal cut in the economy has votes is something so novel that even Elon Musk came to care about it. And this thesis has just been corroborated again.
It was not the only novelty of the date. The surprise appearance of Karina Milei in front of the liberator hotel, a few hours in the afternoon when the good result for the Government was beginning to be known, is a very strong sign: the sister, who tries to escape the microphones whenever she can, feels rectified as the Government’s leader. The aspiration of the other side of the intern to see her removed from the smallest scheme of power seems to have been left behind.
This science fiction story still has several more chapters left.
