Marco Odermatt won the World Cup giant slalom in Sölden. In the DSV team, Anton Grammel shone in eleventh place. Fabian Gratz and Jonas Stockinger also made it into the top 20. Alexander Schmid made his comeback into the top 30.

The German alpine ski racers made an exclamation mark at the season opener in Sölden despite adverse conditions. In the first World Cup giant slalom of the Olympic winter, Anton Grammel finished eleventh. “I’m happy with how it turned out,” said the 27-year-old, who was still a little annoyed. “I would have liked to move further forward.” Fabian Gratz in 17th and Jonas Stockinger in 19th also showed their potential. Alexander Schmid rounded off the good result of the DSV quartet in 27th place.

The Swiss series winner Marco Odermatt celebrated the first victory of the season. Second place went to the Austrian Marco Schwarz (+0.24s) ahead of the Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath (+0.27s).

Odermatt sets the best time

The start was moved down due to strong winds. Long-time winner Marco Odermatt remained unimpressed and was the fastest in the first run. However, the overall World Cup winner of the past four years was only 0.01 seconds ahead of the Austrian Marco Schwarz, with his compatriot Stefan Brennsteiner (+0.25) following in third place.

The best German was Anton Grammel (+1.23) in eleventh place. Jonas Stockinger (19th, +1.71) and Fabian Gratz (27th, +2.33) also took part in the final. Alexander Schmid made his comeback ten months after his second cruciate ligament tear and made it into the second round in 22nd place (+1.94). Linus Straßer (45th, +3.48) and World Cup debutant Hannes Amman (50th, +3.94) did not make it into the top 30.

Gratz shows his potential

Grammel defended eleventh place in the final round. Gratz made the big leap forward, moving up 10 places with his strong performance. Teammate Jonas Stockinger confirmed 19th place. Schmid, who competed in his first race since tearing his cruciate ligament, also finished in the points. 27th place was a good first step into the Olympic winter.

But none of the drivers could really scratch Odermatt’s victory. The Swiss was in good early form and took the win, 0.24 seconds ahead of Schwarz. McGrath was third best of the day, 0.27 short. Seconds to the Swiss’s best time.
