VfL Bochum was in good spirits to win its second game under coach Uwe Rösler in the 2nd Bundesliga. But Louis Köster headed Holstein Kiel to equalize in the 86th minute.
The game ended 1:1 (0:0). Francis Onyeka, who scored two goals in the 3-2 win against Hertha BSC the previous week, gave Bochum the lead with a controversial penalty kick on Saturday afternoon (55th).
“There is a bit of dissatisfaction when we concede a goal five minutes before the end“, said Bochum coach Uwe Rösler to the Sportschau. His counterpart Marcel Rapp saw it similarly: “I’m not happy with the result.”
The Bochum team remains in a relegation zone. Holstein Kiel remained without a win in the fourth game in a row.
Cold, wet and stormy
The fans celebrated their club’s 125th birthday with a choreography before the duel between the relegated teams in wet, cold and stormy weather. Last season both duels in the Bundesliga ended 2-2.
Choreo by the Kiel fans for the 125th anniversary of the founding of Holstein
Thanks to the success against Hertha, which was last Saturday on coach Uwe Rösler’s debut, VfL seemed to be somewhat relieved of the burden of the relegation battle. “The plan was to frustrate the opponent in the first half“, explained Rösler. His team initially looked for a way forward, but Marcel Rapp’s team did the same.
Weak first half
Jonas Therkelsen, who came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw in Nuremberg a week ago, missed the first good chance of the game. The Norwegian shot the ball just past the goal from a very tight angle (11th).
Bochum became dangerous for the first time with a deflected long-range shot from Maximilian Wittek (13th).
But that was it almost until the break. There were no clear chances and the play was very mediocre. The people of Bochum were particularly happy about offering the people of Kiel little space.
Controversial penalty
The second half also started tiredly. But then a duel in the Kiel penalty area and a whistle from referee Florian Lechner brought the game to life. Bochum’s Cajetan Lenz and his opponent Marko Ivezić both went resolutely to the ball, Lechner considered the Kieler’s action a foul, and this debatable decision was confirmed by the video assistant.
Francis Onyeka (l.) took the lead from the penalty spot.
The 18-year-old Onyeka, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, scored his third goal of the season precisely in the bottom right corner.
Bernhardsson hits the post, Köster hits the goal
Kiel reacted as necessary. The pressure increased and the number of deals increased. There were also chances, with Alexander Bernhardsson hitting the post in the 64th minute. A few minutes later the Swede narrowly missed a cross.
However, the deserved equalizer was achieved when substitute Köster headed a cross in such a way that Bochum’s goalkeeper Timo Horn had no chance. “We had countless chances” Marcel Rapp found and stated: “Everyone saw that there was a team that was a bit better.“It was still not enough for more than one point.
