SV Elversberg’s record series ends in Bielefeld. On the 10th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga, DSC Arminia won against the promotion aspirants, who came away empty-handed for the first time after four wins and seven games without defeat. Bochum and Kiel split in a draw. In contrast, SC Paderborn, who have now won more times in a row than ever before in the second division, were celebrating, while their opponents Dynamo Dresden are focusing on the vexing topic of leadership.
Elversberg missed the return to the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Vincent Wagner’s team surprisingly lost 0-2 (0-2) at newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld. With the second defeat of the season due to Joel Grodowski’s goal (17th minute) and Florian Le Joncour’s own goal (28th), a series of seven games without defeat ended for Elversberg. This is – just like the series of four wins that has now ended – a club record (among current and historical series in the 2nd Bundesliga).
The Saarlanders fell back to third place in the table because their pursuers SC Paderborn won 2-1 at Dynamo Dresden and the new leaders FC Schalke 04 won 1-0 against Darmstadt 98 on Friday. The Elversbergers took control early in the first competitive duel with the Bielefeld team, who counterattacked in their own stadium – with success: Grodowski took the lead after a quick transition game. A little later, SVE central defender Le Joncour shot the ball into his own goal after a cross from the fast Benjamin Boakye in an attempt to clear the ball.
The guests struggled in the second half, increased the pressure in front of 24,856 spectators and also had good chances thanks to a hit on the post by Younes Ebnoutalib (61st). But the best offensive in the league so far failed to score this time and Bielefeld managed to break free with the home win after four bankruptcies in a row.
Paderborn continues its winning streak in Dresden
SC Paderborn achieved its sixth win in a row, setting a club record. At Dynamo Dresden, the East Westphalia team turned the game around and won 2-1 (1-1). Christoph Daferner (26th minute) gave Dynamo the lead with a penalty kick in front of 30,990 spectators in the Rudolf Harbig Stadium. Filip Bilbija (45th + 1) also equalized with a penalty before Mika Baur (65th) turned the game around. Paderborn is in second place in the league’s top group. Dresden remains in the bottom of the table.
There have never been six wins in league two in the Paderborn club’s history. “We also discussed that, it’s something special. It’s perhaps also an additional motivation,” said coach Ralf Kettemann to the pay-TV channel “Sky” before kick-off. However, things initially went better for the Saxons. Konrad Faber (22nd) moved into the penalty area on the right, but his shot from short distance only hit the side netting. A little later, Tjark Scheller fouled Dresden’s Niklas Hauptmann in the penalty area, and Daferner converted the penalty (26′).
Although the guests had more possession of the ball, they often didn’t do enough with it. Dynamo is different: After a corner was cleared, Daferner (41′) shot with a shot on the turn, the ball narrowly missed. Then Faber (44th) was shot in the penalty area – penalty. The review confirmed it. So Bilbija equalized with the first SCP chance. After the substitution, Dynamos Lennart Grill prevented another goal with a strong save against substitute Luis Engelns, but seconds later Baur (65th) scored with a volley to give Paderborn the lead. For Dynamo it was the fifth game in which the SGD took the lead but did not win in the end. Four times previously there was only a draw at the final whistle (statistics: points after leading in the 2nd Bundesliga).
Bochum remains undefeated under coach Rösler
VfL Bochum remains undefeated under new coach Uwe Rösler. In the duel between the two relegated teams from the first division, the Bochum team fought to a 1-1 (0-0) draw at Holstein Kiel. A week ago, VfL won 3-2 against Hertha BSC in Rösler’s premiere.
For one half, both teams offered lean football fare in front of 15,034 spectators in the Holstein Stadium. After the break the game picked up speed. First, Francis Onyeka gave Bochum the lead with a penalty kick (55th minute). But Kiel didn’t give up and got the deserved equalizer through substitute Louis Köster (86th).
The draw was still a disappointment for the Kiel team. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team has now been without a win for four games and is stuck in the middle of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite the upward trend under Rösler, Bochum remains second to last in the table.
