ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Young adults in particular use the AI chatbot, especially for practical instructions, text editing and information searches.
Young users dominate
According to a study recently published by OpenAI, around 700 million people use ChatGPT weekly, with around 18 billion requests made per week. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 are particularly active, accounting for almost half of all conversations. Usage in poorer countries is also growing faster than in wealthy regions.
Changing gender distribution
Shortly after the introduction of ChatGPT, in which Microsoft has a 49 percent stake, in November 2022, according to a study by OpenAI, around 80 percent of users had male first names. The majority are now female: 52 percent of weekly active users now have first names that are typically considered female.
Non-professional use in the foreground
According to the study, the majority of chats (73 percent) are on private topics. Practical instructions and tips are particularly in demand (28 percent of requests), closely followed by text editing and optimization with a similarly high proportion. Use to search for information, for example about current news, products or recipes, is 21 percent.
Text editing as a focus
According to the study, many users use ChatGPT specifically for writing tasks. About 38 percent of text editing requests concern correcting or revising texts, 28 percent involve writing emails or social media posts, and 16 percent involve translations. This use makes ChatGPT particularly valuable for anyone who needs assistance with writing.
Rare use for relationships and role play
According to the study by Open AI, chats about feelings, relationships or role play are still the exception. Only 1.9 percent of conversations deal with emotional topics, while role playing only accounts for 0.4 percent of all conversations.
