At Preußen Münster, Simon Scherder is a veteran. Now the club has to be without its defender for months. And not for the first time.

Bad news for Preußen Münster: defender Simon Scherder was seriously injured in training and will be absent from the second division team for a long time. The 32-year-old was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee – the third in his career.

As the club announced on Wednesday evening, Scherder “will be out for the next few months”. For the veteran, the diagnosis represents another serious setback – even though he had only just fought his way back into the starting line-up.

“This is an extremely painful and bitter moment for all of us,” said sports director Ole Kittner. We know Scherder’s ordeal, which he has already successfully put behind him in recent years. “We will stand firmly by his side in the next few days, weeks and months and support him with all our strength on his journey back to the pitch – even beyond the summer.”

Scherder has been in the Münster professional squad for over 13 years and has played 316 competitive games for the club during this time. His contract with Prussia runs until 2026.

The central defender tore his cruciate ligament for the first time in June 2015. On his first appearance after a nine-month break, he suffered another cruciate ligament tear in a friendly – after just seven minutes on the pitch. He was only able to celebrate his comeback in April 2017. “Simon has proven throughout his career that he has given the right answer to every setback that has happened to him,” said Kittner.
