Before Bayern’s premier class game, parts of the south curve draw attention to themselves with a banner. It’s about Jérôme Boateng again.

Many FC Bayern supporters had already positioned themselves clearly in the Bundesliga home win against Borussia Dortmund (2-1). Now the next action followed: A large banner before the kick-off of the Champions League duel between Munich and Club Bruges read: “Against abuse of power and physical and psychological violence in relationships”. The background to the protest is Jérôme Boateng’s planned internship with the German record champions, which is being controversially discussed in public.

Boateng, who played for Munich from 2011 to 2021, would like to pursue a coaching career in the future. The 2014 world champion has already acquired the B license, and further training levels – including the A license and football teacher training – are to follow. At the initiative of head coach Vincent Kompany, who made him an offer at the end of September, Boateng is supposed to intern at FC Bayern.

The club management defended the decision despite the ongoing criticism. Sports director Max Eberl explained: “It’s not about employment, it’s not about a permanent position at FC Bayern. It’s simply about watching training sessions. It’s about nothing more.” CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also commented on the case. He spoke of a “complicated case” that also involved “resocialization.”

The debate was triggered by a ruling by the Munich I Regional Court from July 2024. At that time, Boateng was found guilty of intentional simple bodily harm on his former partner. The judge imposed a fine of 200,000 euros and issued a warning with a penalty clause. According to the court, there is no previous criminal conviction. The verdict stated that there was nothing left of the accusation of being a “notorious wife beater”.
