Tom Mickel will remain with Hamburger SV even after his retirement in the summer. The 36-year-old former goalkeeper will be installed as a coordinator in the transition area between youth teams and professionals. The Bundesliga returnee announced this on Wednesday. Above all, he should “closely accompany” the young players who are on the threshold of a professional career.

Among other things, this involves the topics of sleep, nutrition and regeneration, emphasized Loïc Favé, who acts as head of the youth performance center and assistant coach of the Bundesliga team. Mickel had already taken on this role as a contact person for Fabio Baldé (20) and Otto Stange (18) during his active time.

Sports director Claus Costa added: “We have emphasized several times in the past that our doors will always be open to Tom even after his active career. We are therefore very pleased that he will be back at Volkspark just a few months after the end of his career and will closely accompany our boys in the transition area.”

Mickel himself said: “I’m clearly concerned with the best possible development of our boys. There is enormous potential at HSV and in its youth sector. Our aim must be that the best boys in their year wear the diamond on their chest and that we prepare them optimally for their future professional careers at HSV. I’m really keen on that and am looking forward to being able to enter the Volksparkstadion and the campus on a regular basis again.”
