Four goals in the second half of the game led Arsenal FC to a high 4-0 (0-0) home win against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening. It was the third success of the “Gunners” in the Champions League without conceding a goal. The British made a clear statement in the premier class.
Central defender Gabriel gave the Londoners the lead with a header (57′), Gabriel Martinelli cleverly completed a counterattack (64′). Viktor Gyökeres scored twice from close range against the Madrilenians, who were now advancing further (68th, 70th).
The hosts dominated the first half of the game, but failed to capitalize on it. Eberechi Eze hit the post (5th), just a few seconds later Declan Rice chased the ball over the box from distance.
Oblak saves
Jan Oblak was able and had to show what he could do several times in the Spaniards’ box: he saved with a lot of overview against Bukaya Saka (19th). Even after the break he kept his box clean against Victor Gyökeres.
Until then, Atletico had little to offer – but the chances were certainly top-class: When Arsenal keeper David Raya failed, Julian Alvarez almost missed the empty goal from an acute angle from the right corner flag.
After the break: Arsenal perfect
After Alvarez was unlucky with a shot against the crossbar after the break, the home fans at the Emirates Stadium in London suddenly couldn’t stop cheering.
First, captain Rice hit a perfect free kick from the left side in front of the goal, where Gabriel broke free and headed it in unstoppable from close range. Almost in return, a shot by coach’s son Giuliano Simeone was deflected at the last moment.
But against the guests who were now acting a little more offensively, Myles Lewis-Skelly fed the starting Martinelli, who cleverly hit the bottom right from a left-hand position.
Gyökeres with a double blow
Then Victor Gyökeres’s hour came. First he put the ball into the Atletico goal in the six-meter area with a lot of will to make it 3-0, then he scored the next goal after a Rice corner and an intelligent header pass from Gabriel.
