It’s about telling a story “correctly” – looking back and forward

“Arrest warrant is the greatest artist the German rap scene has ever produced,” it says right at the beginning of the trailer. The documentary shows the massive influence of the Offenbacher, whose real name is Aykut Anhan, on the German hip-hop scene. At the same time, the documentary also shows the dark side of his life: The trailer suggests that the film will provide unsparing insights into the rapper’s childhood and family, mental challenges and social connections. At the end of the trailer, arrest warrant himself says that it’s about “making sure my story is told correctly.”

“Brutally Honest”: Arrest Warrant’s Personal Story

“Personal interviews with arrest warrant and those close to him reveal the story of the German rap icon in a brutally honest way,” is how Netflix describes the production. The result is “a rare, unvarnished image of a man who finds himself at a critical crossroads – radically authentic and unfiltered like the music that once made arrest warrant famous.”

When arrest warrant entered the German rap scene in 2010, he changed it forever, the streaming platform said in a previous press release. “He became an identification figure for many young people and became the darling of street rap with his studio album RUSSISCH ROULETTE in 2014. His work THE BLACK ALBUM, released in 2022, produced by Cologne Grimme Prize winner Benjamin Bazzazian, is considered a milestone in German rap,” it continues. But in 2023, arrest warrants became quieter.

A rapper at a breaking point

Together with close relatives, important companions and arrest warrant himself, the documentary now traces his career so far – from his rise to the identity turning point at which Hafti, as his fans call him, finds himself after more than 15 years as a rapper.

Jan Delay, Capo and Xatar already have their say in the trailer. Soufian, Moses Pelham, Marteria, Niko Backspin, Kool Savas, Peter Fox and Bausa are also expected to appear in the documentary itself.

Personal abysses

Netflix describes the documentary as a “multi-layered portrait of a man in constant battle with the demons of his past and present.” Away from common clichés about the glorification of drugs or violence in street rap, the film tells how the traumas of his childhood drove him bit by bit to the edge of the abyss.

The documentary was produced by Elias M’Barek and Pacco-Luca Nitsche; Directed by Juan Moreno and Sinan Sevinç.
