Yle’s 9:30 TV news had technical problems on Sunday. Right from the start of the broadcast, the screens in the news studio were dark. News anchor Hanna Visala apologized for the situation at the beginning of the broadcast.

– Good evening about the news. And I apologize right at the beginning for the technical problems in this broadcast, especially with the pictures, Visala continued before continuing to talk about the situation in Gaza.

During broadcasts, the large screen behind the anchor usually shows illustrations and moving images related to the current news topic. The screen was dark throughout the broadcast, as was the vertical smaller screen next to it.

The screen reserved for the Meteorologist’s weather maps didn’t work either, so the broadcast showed the latest meteorologist Matti Huutonen from the previous weather forecast for tomorrow. The problems continued during the sports screen following the news.

The picture shown during the shows, which is only shown to the viewers, was shown normally, so the broadcast was not dependent on the anchor alone.

Acute situation

Yle’s Chief Technology Officer Janne Yli-Äyhö says that the background walls stopped working just before the news broadcast.

– There has already been some instability earlier in the day, but this acute situation came just before the broadcast, Yli-Äyhö says.

The experts investigated the situation during the broadcasts, but the fault was not found and it was still not clear a little after nine. The fault is in the transmission systems, not the screens themselves.

The situation is not suspected to be due to external influence, Yli-Äyhö says.
