Both Freiburg and Frankfurt started with errors. The host took advantage of the first chance – then came unity. At the end the points are divided.

Despite a brace from Jonathan Burkardt, Eintracht Frankfurt missed out on their fourth win of the season in the Bundesliga. After conceding a late goal with a remarkable free kick from Vincenzo Grifo (87th minute), the Hessians couldn’t get past a 2-2 (2-1) draw at SC Freiburg and were even lucky in the end.

Derry Scherhant scored in the second minute to make it 1-0 for Baden in front of 34,700 spectators, including former Freiburg cult coach Christian Streich. Thanks to Burkardt (18th/38th), the guests temporarily turned the game around – and thus showed a good reaction to the setbacks against Atlético Madrid (1:5) and FC Bayern (0:3) before the international break. Thanks to Joker Grifo, Freiburg hit back again and remained unbeaten in the seventh competitive game in a row.

“It’s about forcing the special luck of the game,” said Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller shortly before kick-off at DAZN: “That’s what we want to do today.” Freiburg’s coach Julian Schuster had a clear instruction for his protégés: “The most important thing is that we get the energy and the fight on the pitch.”

The spectators in the sold-out Freiburg Arena saw the hosts take the lead after just 110 seconds. After a devastating bad pass from captain and defense chief Robin Koch, Scherhant scored his second goal of the season. Ex-Freiburger Koch’s mistake was consistent with the ongoing defensive weaknesses of the league’s weakest defense.

However, Freiburg also made a mistake with consequences. Johan Manzambi stumbled a free kick towards the opponent, Burkardt, who came from rivals FSV Mainz 05 in the summer, used the faux pas to score his third goal of the season thanks to his strong technique.

The interim result was okay after half an hour. Both teams worked intensively and chose an offensive approach. More goals would have been possible for both Eintracht and SC.
