“That did something to my hormones,” explains Gerard Nijboer about his race in 1980. The former marathon runner finished after more than forty kilometers on De Dam in the heart of Amsterdam and amazed everyone. “I was in a really good vibe and this gave me wings.”
To this day, people talk about Nijboer’s unique achievement in 1980. His time of 2:09:01 also remained the Dutch record for 23 years. It was only in 2003 that Kamiel Maase came under Nijboer’s time.
