Despite a decent performance, the Iserlohn Roosters missed out on a surprise at the top DEL team from Straubing on Friday evening.
Iserlohn held its own against the second-placed Straubinger excellently for long periods, but in the end it was 0:2 (0:0, 0:1, 0:1) from the Roosters’ point of view. Alex Green (25th minute) and Nicholas Halloran (53rd) ensured Straubing’s home win with their goals. Iserlohn remains second to last in the DEL with only one win this season.
Iserlohn annoys Straubing
For long stretches of the game, Iserlohn managed to keep the Tigers, who had started the season very well with seven wins, in the mood Ice hockey gain weight. The Roosters provoked a lot of puck losses and top-class finishes for Straubing were limited. Even a somewhat harsh five-minute penalty against Macoy Erkamps at the end of the first third didn’t faze the Roosters.
Iserlohn even managed to create several scoring chances of his own against the favorites, but Tigers goalkeeper Henrik Haukeland was there several times in front of 5,190 spectators in the Straubing ice stadium. The first goal finally fell on the other side: defender Green hit the top corner with a powerful shot, Roosters goalkeeper Andreas Jenike had no chance to save.
Roosters sniff the equalizer – which doesn’t come
In the final third, with the score at 0-1, there was tension from the Roosters’ perspective. Straubing largely controlled the puck and played powerfully forward. But Iserlohn also continued to appear dangerously ahead on the counterattack, and Daniel Fischbuch could have equalized in the middle of the last period.
Iserlohn’s hopes of winning a point experienced a bitter setback when Nicholas Halloran bravely stepped up, rounded Jenike and slotted in to make it 2-0. Coach Stefan Nyman’s team logically threw everything forward in the final minutes. Taro Jentzsch hit the side netting from a promising position (56th), but the goal was never to come.
