The talks reportedly went well. Nevertheless, Danny Röhl has decided against joining one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
Danny Röhl will not be the new coach of Glasgow Rangers. This is reported by the pay TV channel Sky. Accordingly, the German informed the traditional Scottish club on Wednesday that he is currently not available.
According to the report, there had previously been good discussions and Röhl was said to be one of the top candidates for the post. However, after further negotiations, the 36-year-old decided against joining the Rangers. The reason: From his point of view, the timing is currently not right.
Röhl worked as an assistant coach at FC Bayern between 2019 and 2021 – first under Niko Kovač, then under Hansi Flick. With Munich he won the treble of the championship, DFB Cup and Champions League in 2020. In 2021, Röhl followed the then new national coach Flick as an assistant to the German national team, but was then released again in September 2023 due to unsuccessfulness.
A few weeks later, Röhl was hired in England. He saved the second division team Sheffield Wednesday from relegation despite an actually hopeless situation. In the summer of 2025 he turned his back on the club.
Rangers coach Russell Martin was fired at the beginning of October. The Scottish record champions are only in eighth place in the league after seven games, have only achieved one win this season and have only picked up eight points. Heart of Midlothian are already in first place (19 points) and their arch-rivals Celtic (17 points) in second place.
The Rangers also missed out on qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League this season. Most recently, Bo Svensson, who once coached Mainz 05 and Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, is said to have declined the club’s position as head coach.
