It had been hinted at, and now the change has been officially announced: Rouven Schröder will become head of sports at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Gladbachers announced this on Tuesday (October 14, 2025). Schröder will be officially introduced on Thursday.
Schröder, 49, comes from Austrian club RB Salzburg, where he was under contract since December 2024 and until the end of 2028. Gladbach will therefore pay a transfer fee to Salzburg; none of the parties involved has disclosed the amount. According to media reports, it should be up to one million euros.
“In addition to the experience, Rouven Schröder has the necessary competencies and communication skills that are needed for this demanding task”said Borussia’s managing director Stefan Stegemann. Schröder has already worked in the Bundesliga for 1. FSV Mainz 05, RB Leipzig and Schalke 04 as an official in various positions.
He is said to have been a candidate for Borussia from Mönchengladbach several times in the past, but a contract was not concluded at the time. He now succeeds Roland Virkus, who left the club at the end of September.
Polanski or another coach? Schröder will also decide that
He drew the conclusions from a very weak start to the season. Two weeks earlier, coach Gerardo Seoane had been fired. Things hardly went better under interim coach Eugen Polanski: With three points from six games, Gladbach are second to last in the table. On Friday (from 8:30 p.m. in the audio stream and in the live ticker) Borussia will be guests at Union Berlin. The new sports director should now decide whether Polanski will become a permanent solution.
