Recommendations of the Editorial team

Frank Zappa’s Halloween concert series is one of the staples of his live history. Now the October 31, 1978 show is being released in its entirety for the first time.

A five-CD box set entitled “Halloween ’78” will be released on October 24, 2024, which, in addition to the main concert, also contains a bonus recording of the tour opening on October 27, 1978. The recordings were remixed and mastered from the original 24-track tapes. The edition was produced by Ahmet Zappa and Joe Travers, the estate’s archivist. Travers described the 1978 Halloween concerts as a high point in Zappa’s relationship with his New York audience, whom the musician once described as “New York’s best weirdos.”

The live box set is now available in the official version Zappa Shop can be pre-ordered.

Remastered recordings and collector’s editions

In addition to the music, the release contains several props and collectibles, including a Zappa mask, a so-called “grimoire” book with photos and annotations, and a UV light gadget intended to reveal hidden illustrations.

In addition to the box set, several other formats will be released: two double LPs on colored vinyl, a CD with selected titles and a digital deluxe version. The Halloween concerts of 1978 are considered a particularly dense and experimental phase in Zappa’s live work. The band line-up for this show included, among others, Vinnie Colaiuta, Arthur Barrow, Peter Wolf and violinist L. Shankar, who can be heard in several improvisations.
