The planned construction of a veal calf farm in Drogterstoringen is not going well with a neighboring dog breeder. According to this neighbor, it is unjustified that the municipality of De Wolden has agreed to the construction plan without imposing requirements on the existing, outdated stables of the livestock farm.

The man has gone to the Council of State to stop the construction of the veal calf stable next to his yard. He states that the manure cellar of the old stable is leaking and thus contaminating the groundwater. The broken roof of that stable is also said to have caused inconvenience for years.

The municipality and the veal farmer deny the problems and point out that there is no evidence of leaks. According to them, the new stable will be neatly integrated into the landscape. The livestock industry wants to break ground as soon as possible and build a large new stable south of the current stables and significantly expand the number of calves. There are about 300 calves in the old stable.

According to the man, he has indeed demonstrated that there is a leak. “I have been asking the municipality for years to do something about this, but nothing has happened. It also took a long time for the asbestos rubble from a blown-out stable roof to be cleared away. And it is still not all gone. And now other roof material has also blown onto my property. The municipality must finally do something about this.”

The man is further incensed about the direction of construction of the new stable. The municipality required him to place his buildings in a north-south direction, but his neighbor is allowed to build in an east-west direction. According to him, a north-south direction fits better into the landscape and causes less odor nuisance. “Because then you can place the ventilation pipes much further from the homes.”

According to the municipality’s spokesperson, the current building plan fits in better with the environment than Tibben’s alternative. The new stable will be integrated into the landscape and bordered with greenery. As far as the old stables are concerned, the municipality has no problem with them remaining standing.

The Council of State will rule on the construction of the new stable within a few weeks. Complaints about the old stable are being dealt with in another ongoing lawsuit.
