1. FC Magdeburg has drawn conclusions after the catastrophic start to the new season. Coach Markus Fiedler has lost his job.
After only three points from the first eight games of the season, 1. FC Magdeburg has parted ways with head coach Markus Fiedler. The club announced this on Sunday evening. With the 39-year-old, who only took over at the second division club in the summer, assistant coaches Andreas Schumacher and Saban Uzun also have to go.
FCM Managing Director Sport Otmar Schork explained that an in-depth analysis had been carried out over the past week. The decision was made “that the team no longer had any trust in Markus and no hope of a turnaround.” After the claps against Elversberg (0:4) and in the test against Braunschweig (0:6), there was helplessness in the team.
On Tuesday, Schork stood by Fiedler even after six league defeats in a row. Magdeburg is currently at the bottom of the 2nd Bundesliga table. Last year the club was playing for promotion to the first division under former coach Christian Titz. But the 54-year-old left the club in the summer for league rivals Hannover 96. Fiedler, who had previously been on the sidelines for VfB Stuttgart’s second team, was supposed to continue the good work of his predecessor. This project has now failed.
The 39-year-old coach also had his say in the club’s announcement. “We knew that we would need time after the upheaval in the summer, but after many unfortunate games we got into a negative spiral that was difficult to stop,” said Fiedler, explaining the poor results. He wished the club “only the best for the future.”
