The Eisbären Berlin are finally back on the road to success – even if the champions had to tremble until the end against the Nuremberg Ice Tigers.

The Eisbären Berlin have confirmed their rising form in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL): they struck on Sunday afternoon the reigning German champion the Nuremberg Ice Tigers 3:2 (0:0, 2:1, 1:1). In the DEL It was the Eisbären’s fourth win in a row.

Bergmann hits the crossbar

In an intense and competitive first third, approaches to goal on the ice were initially in short supply. The guests from Nuremberg were unable to capitalize on the first power play of this game, while Eisbären goalie Jake Hildebrand was able to distinguish himself with saves for the first time (7th and 8th minutes). Shortly afterwards, the home team also played in the majority for the first time – but also without being able to convert this advantage into a goal.

The Eisbären Frederik Tiffels and Andreas Eder failed in their attempts against Nuremberg goalkeeper Evan Fitzpatrick (12th, 14th). After around 17 minutes played, the right post prevented Berlin from falling behind after Alanov’s finish. A deep murmur went through the arena at Ostbahnhof seconds before the end of the first third when Lean Bergmann’s shot hit the crossbar. The score remained 0-0 for the time being.

In the second third nothing changed from the usual picture – until the 27th minute. Bergmann was in exactly the right place and scored the follow-up shot to make it 1-0 for Berlin after Manuel Wiederer’s attempt had been blocked. The people of Nuremberg fought back, but time after time they couldn’t get past Hildebrand.

And the Eisbären increased: Tiffels – after an outstanding solo – provided his ninth assist of the current season for Leo Pföderl, who made it 2-0 (34th). But the Ice Tigers came back straight away: of all people, long-time ice bear Constantin Braun made it 1:2 (36th) with his first goal of the season – which was the same as the score before the final third.

Tension until the end

In the final section, Nuremberg pushed for an equalizer, but Eisbären goalie Hildebrand repeatedly demonstrated his quality. After winning a face-off in the power play, the Eisbären struck again: Ty Ronning sank a high shot from a central position to make it 3-1 (50th). As in the second third, the Ice Tigers had the right answer this time too. Tyler Spezia pushed the puck over the line and restored the old distance (53′).

The Eisbären survived the guests’ final offensive unscathed, Eric Hördler only hit the post on the other side – so the Berliners ultimately had a narrow 3-2 win.
