Keaton was born in Los Angeles in 1946. Her legal name is Diane Halle; her father’s surname. She used her mother’s name because there was another actress with the same name. Keaton broke through in Hollywood in 1972 with the film The Godfather from director Francis Ford Coppola. She played the wife of mob boss Michael Corleone, Kay Adams-Corleone.

Keaton worked in the years after her successful role The Godfather together with director Woody Allen, with whom she later had a relationship.
