Erling Haaland has brought Norway a lot closer to next year’s World Cup. The striker initially showed nerves when taking two penalties.

Norway’s superstar Erling Haaland missed twice from the penalty spot within a few minutes in the World Cup qualifier against Israel. The ex-Dortmunder failed in his two penalty kicks because of HSV goalkeeper Daniel Peretz. Nevertheless, Haaland was able to celebrate in the end. After his double faux pas, he scored three times out of the game. In the end it was 5:0 (3:0) for Norway.

Haaland tried his first penalty in the 5th minute flat to the left, but Peretz was there. Because the goalkeeper jumped off the line too early, the penalty was repeated – but Peretz also won the second attempt. This time Haaland put the ball flat to the right, but the keeper also suspected that and made the save for the second time.

Shortly afterwards, Norway benefited from two own goals. Anan Khalaili (18th) and Idan Nachmias (28th) each directed the ball into their own net. Haaland (27th) had already scored to make it 2-0. He completed his hat-trick with further goals in the 63rd and 72nd minutes. The 25-year-old from Manchester City now has 51 goals in 46 international matches. After their sixth win in their sixth game, Norway can almost plan for the World Cup finals.

The mood in the Ullevaal Stadium, which was not allowed to be completely filled for security reasons, was tense. There were whistles when the Israeli national anthem was played, and a huge Palestine flag was unfurled in the stands, along with a poster with the inscription: “Let Children Live.” Some Norway fans also symbolically held up a red card.

As the Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported, the mood in front of the stadium changed around an hour after kick-off. The initially peaceful protest became increasingly aggressive. Demonstrators threw objects at police officers and tried to break through barriers. The police responded with tear gas and several arrests were made. According to the NTB news agency, no injuries were initially reported.

An Israeli flag also burst into flames, as could be seen in pictures. By this time, the majority of the approximately 1,000 demonstrators had already left the stadium. According to NTB, around 100 to 200 people refused to end the protest as planned.

The game had already caused political discussions in advance. NFF President Lise Klaveness had called for Israel to be excluded from World Cup qualification due to the actions of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli association reacted with sharp criticism.
