Alba Berlin got off to a false start in the Basketball Bundesliga. The Berliners lost on Saturday evening after a thriller at the Würzburg Baskets with 92:96 (55:51). For coach Pedro Calles’ team it was the second defeat in the third game.

Alba starts the Champions League with a defeat against Chalon

Alba Berlin would certainly have imagined the first game in the Basketball Champions League differently. Against Elan Chalon, the eleven-time German champion had problems, especially offensively, and was too dependent on the strong Boogie Ellis.more

Alba shows nerves

From the start it was a fast and hectic game. The guests immediately hit their three-point shots, but initially not from close or medium distance. The early 12:6 lead was quickly lost again. Alba had problems especially under the basket, which Würzburg took advantage of again and again. The lead now changed back and forth.

But the game didn’t really flow, especially as things got more and more heated in the second quarter. Würzburg played very hard and got more fouls as a result. They also received two technical fouls in a row for complaining. But that motivated the hosts, as they hit one three-pointer after another. Alba remained calm and turned a four-point deficit into a four-point lead before the break.

After the break, the guests’ mistakes increased again. In the third quarter the deficit grew to seven points (68:75). Würzburg always had an answer – often with successful threesomes. But Alba fought back and turned the game around again. The Berliners were still ahead 92:91 with 24 seconds left until Marcus Carr converted a three-point throw. Five seconds before the end, Malte Delow failed with a three-pointer and missed a possible victory.
