Markus Kauczinski should get TSV 1860 Munich back on track. His advantage: The new Giesinger head coach knows how to get promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.
From Monday, Markus Kauczinski wants to officially lead TSV 1860 Munich back on the road to success. It is the 10th coach to tackle this if you look at the last eight years at the traditional Bavarian club. The 55-year-old football teacher is taking over a team that has been without a win in five games and, instead of marching towards promotion, is now heading towards the bottom of the table.
Nevertheless, Kauczinski didn’t think twice when the Giesingers contacted him and those around him also seemed enthusiastic about the new task: “Yesterday, after it came out that I had signed, I received 250 WhatsApp messages. There wasn’t one who asked: Why are you doing that? Everyone said: How cool is that?”
Kauczinski can advance
The 55-year-old got around a lot during his coaching positions at Schalke, Karlsruher SC, FC Ingolstadt, St. Pauli, Dynamo Dresden and most recently at SV Wehen Wiesbaden. He’s also already gotten to know his new home stadium: “I’ve played in the stadium many times, it’s always been fun. I just like the club based on its history.”
Now it’s up to him to get this club back on track. The clear goal is promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. Kauczinski achieved this with the KSC in 2013. He also brought Wehen Wiesbaden into the second division as a coach. Theoretically, the 55-year-old knows how promotion works, but how is it supposed to work with TSV 1860 Munich? “Now we have to find a team, establish a style of play, fight, show passion.”
“Release the brakes in your head and legs”
Kauczinski further explains: “We all have the feeling that there is more to the team, that there must be more than what we have seen so far.” In order to get the best out of the team, the new Lions coach first wants to shake off the last few weeks: “You have to leave things behind sometimes. […] We have to make sure we release this brake that is somewhere, in the head or in the legs.”
He doesn’t yet know what exactly Giesinger’s new style of play will look like and how Kauczinski will act as a coach. Because Kauczinski repeatedly emphasizes that he is flexible and will adapt to what is best for the team. It’s the same with his style as a coach: “I can be chummy when I can, I’m authoritarian when I have to. I’m what the situation demands, what the team demands.”
The tough test against league leaders Duisburg
The situation currently requires a quick turnaround, ideally against league leaders Duisburg on Sunday (October 19th). A big challenge for Kauczinski right from the start, but no reason for him to worry: “Here at home against Duisburg in such an atmosphere, I can hardly wait to get started.” A win against the “Zebras” would be a strong exclamation mark after the difficult weeks in Giesing.
