In terms of sport, things haven’t been going well for Florian Wirtz at club level recently. Before the international match he received special encouragement.

Florian Wirtz received the Footballer of the Year award before the World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg. The 22-year-old from Liverpool FC received the journalists’ choice in August for his performances in the previous season as a Bayer Leverkusen player. He prevailed in the “Kicker” vote ahead of Michael Olise from FC Bayern Munich and former Stuttgart player Nick Woltemade.

Wirtz has been under contract with Liverpool FC since the summer. The English champions paid around 150 million euros for the transfer – a sum that makes Wirtz the most expensive German footballer to date. However, after moving to Anfield Road, he struggled to fit into the team at the start of the Premier League season.

On the other hand, Wirtz is in the national team. With 34 international matches and eight goals, he is one of the central figures in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s plans on the way to the 2026 World Cup. Most recently, Wirtz impressed with a remarkable free-kick goal in the 3-1 win against Northern Ireland.
